Macau, China, January 11, 2018: The sports community in Macau, China, has lost a long-serving member and friend with the passing of Mr Pau Ma Chong on Monday, January 8. He was 90 years old.
Mr Pau was Vice Chairman of the General Assembly of the Sports and Olympic Committee of Macau, China, and had been involved in sport all his life.
He was a member of the Macau basketball team in his youth and, after retiring as a player, he became heavily involved in the development of sport in Macau. This role led him to senior management positions in several sports federations, including football, basketball and volleyball.
One of his main characteristics was his honest and forthright approach, his “get to the point” attitude and his plain speaking in order to achieve his goals.
He was also a member of the Preparatory Committee of the Macau Special Administrative Region, Macau Sports Council and Macau Basic Law Consultative Committee as the former Portuguese enclave was handed back to the mainland in 1999.
Mr Pau received the Roll of Honour in Sports in 1993 from the government of Portuguese Macau and again by the government of the Macau SAR of the PRC in 2002.
The President of the Sports and Olympic Committee of Macau, China, Mr Charles Lo, said the passing of Mr Pau had affected the whole of Macau, not only the sports community.
“Mr Pau’s passing is a deep loss to the Macau sports community,” said Mr Lo, who is Chairman of the Olympic Council of Asia Media Committee and a member of the OCA Executive Board.
“His spirit and his devotion to sport inspired the younger generation and served as a good example to everyone involved in sport, either as an athlete, administrator or official.
“He played a big part in the development of sport in Macau over many years and his influence and contribution will be felt for many more years to come.”
